Jaume Ramírez Deconstructs the Lamp for Latest Marset Collection

“The cylinder creates an impeccable spot of light. But the screen creates an area of light in a very ‘premeditated’ way,” says Ramírez about the versatility of the Milana collection. “Consequently, the object is no longer just a cylinder and a screen.” Photography courtesy of Marset.  “A lamp emphasizes the human condition,” asserts Spanish designer Jaume Ramírez. “In our designs, the direct relationship between the object and the person is paramount” he adds, referencing his recent collaboration with European-based lighting company Marset. For Ramírez’s second Marset collection he focused on creating a minimalist design that spotlights a moveable point of light. Streams of light illuminate the unique contours of each pendant.  Photography courtesy of Marset.  The Milana collection is comprised of modular pendant lamps that embody the idea of fluid movement, enabling designers to create various lighting compositions of size and color. Eastlake Studio: Provocateurs of Interior Design Technology

Image
In the last few decades, architecture and interior design have experienced a dramatic shift in the workflows that professionals consider standard. Hand-drafting is long gone; for many it’s nostalgic, and many more embrace the power incumbent to digital drafting tools. Some take it even further with   BIM , embracing the process to lead their businesses into lasting success. Eastlake Studio is a Chicago-based interior design and architecture firm that has been operational for 33 years. They specialize in corporate office design, producing state-of-the-art workspaces for their clients. Principal Christina Brown says Eastlake has always been driven by the advent of technology — “We really were one of the first architecture firms to be using computers,” she said, offering proof: one can see two Eastlake founders on a 1991 cover of  Mac Chicago , a well-respected publication for Mac users. The cover of the magazine was the very beginning of their journey with design technology, but the a

Interior Design Trends That Will Shape the Next Decade

Image
Interiors are taking center stage in 2020, as more people are spending more time at home. Architects and designers are increasingly aware of their responsibility in   improving their clients’ well-being and even helping them in the prevention of diseases , as they search for the best solutions for their interior design projects. ArchDaily’s featured monthly topic for March was dedicated to Interiors and the articles related to this topic accumulated over 1 million pageviews, surpassing by 240% the number of pageviews achieved in other months in the same semester. As interior design increasingly becomes a subject of interest among architects and designers, we reviewed the projects that have been published on ArchDaily during the last year in the Residential Architecture,  Interior Design  and Refurbishment categories, to see if there were some design decisions and solutions that were generating trends. We found a few that could be useful in making some predictions on how interiors wil

Biophilia: Bringing Nature into Interior Design

Image
Interior design  begins with human experience. Considering the physical, mental, and emotional needs of people, interior designers use human-centered approaches to address how we live today. Creating novel approaches to promoting health, safety, and welfare, contemporary interiors are increasingly inspired by  biophilia  as a holistic approach to design. By definition, interior design encompasses diverse aspects of our environment. The discipline extends to building materials and finishes; casework, furniture, furnishings, and equipment; lighting; acoustics; wayfinding; ergonomics and anthropometrics; and human environmental behavior. Centering on experience,  biophilia  influences the moment-to-moment physical and sensory elements found within interiors. It impacts our emotions, health, and overall feeling. But what is biophilia, and how does it connect to design? Biophilia is the idea that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. The term translates to ‘th

Expressing Interior Design Trends Through Furniture

Image
Architecture sets the scene and provides the framework, but interior design and furniture can have a strong influence on the vibe and mood of a space. As trends in interior design evolve over time, it’s often expressed in the furniture chosen to fill the room.  Interior  furniture speaks volumes about our priorities and personalities, as well as the atmosphere we want to convey. Flexform’s 2020 Indoor Collection brings fresh momentum to their aesthetic, pieces that tell the story of an informal yet elegant lifestyle. While the designs are timeless, nonetheless certain trends emerge that speak to the desire to create a welcoming, comfortable habitat with furniture that enhances the space without drawing too much attention to any one piece. Sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, ottomans, tables, and chairs all harmoniously mix in the collection featuring natural colors and textures, metal accents, and smoothly contoured silhouettes. What Is Interior Design (And Why Can It Really Make You Feel Better)?

If you don't like a specific musical style, the theater bores you, or you're not attracted to works of art, you can almost always avoid them. Architecture, however, is different. A poorly thought-out project will affect the lives of many people consistently and for a long time. With interiors, this effect is even more amplified. Humanity is spending more and more time indoors, which directly impacts our well-being and health. In periods of compulsory retirement, as in the current pandemic of   Covid-19 , we gain a sense of how important interior spaces are for our well-being and even for the prevention of diseases. Designing an indoor environment is a huge responsibility for a professional. An interior designer must plan, research, coordinate, and manage these projects to obtain an adequately healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment for the people who use the space. But what, in fact, is interior design? Not infrequently, interior design is confused with decoration -
